The Univesity Basketball League (UBL) began historically is 2007 with just 10 teams. During that year, its was known to be as University College Basketball League
At that year in 2007, University Putra Malaysia (UPM) were crowned as the champions for the league.
At 2017, the league has renamed itself to University Basketball League (UBL) and since then, the league has continue to the name till this day.
In 2020, UBL has manage to get a participation of 36 teams, comprising of boys and girls from the various universities in Malaysia.The UBL are played during the weekends during the seasons period, commonly at UCSI University Basketball Arena.
The UBL main sponsor is Gatorade Malaysia. The associated sponsors are Molten Malaysia, Peak Malaysia, Supersports Malaysia, Baunfiends Malaysia, Backroll and Pusat Pakaian Hari-Hari.
